Andrographis paniculata
A. paniculata contains the active constituent andrographolides (diterpene lactones). Several double-blind clinical trials have found that A. paniculata reduces the severity of common cold symptoms, such as sore throat, upper respiratory catarrh, bronchial cough and fever.[4-7] Andrographolides amounting to 60mg per day have been shown to improve symptoms of the common cold and reduce recovery time.[Preventing colds may be achieved with 10mg andrographolides, which may increase resistance to colds.

Echinacea purpurea
E. purpurea has been traditionally used to support immune function and provide relief of upper respiratory catarrh, sore throat and feverish conditions.

Chicoric acid, found in E. purpurea, increases phagocytic activity in vivo after oral administration.

Olea europaea (olive leaf)
O. europaea is used in traditional western herbal medicine for respiratory ailments such as cough and sore throat.[2,11,12] The primary active constituent of O. europaea is oleuropein. When hydrolysed by plasma enzymes, oleuropein is broken down to D-elenolic acid (calcium elenolate) which enters infected cells to strengthen immune defence.[11]

Vitamin C
Numerous clinical studies support the use of vitamin C in reducing the severity and duration of colds. Ascorbic acid enhances neutrophil activity and, by reducing plasma histamine levels, dampens the histamine response, which includes symptoms of runny nose and watery eyes.

Zinc
Zinc is the structural component of a wide variety of proteins, neuropeptides, hormone receptors and cell membranes. It inhibits the release of histamine from basophils, and is necessary for the healthy production of lymphocytes.
