Background: Andrographis is a traditional Ayurvedic herb that is commonly found growing in the plains and undergrowths of India, from the base of the Himalayas towards Sri Lanka in the south.[1] Because it grows so abundantly, andrographis has widespread use as a household remedy throughout its native habitats.[2]
Ayurvedic texts refer to andrographis as the ‘king of bitters’ where it was traditionally indiicated for a wide range of health issues.[3]
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), andrographis is considered to be an energetically ‘cold’ medicine, used to dispel heat and toxicity in the lungs, throat and urinary tract.[3] TCM also uses andrographis to dry systemic ‘dampness.’ [4]
Andrographis paniculata A. paniculata contains the active constituent andrographolides (diterpene lactones). Several double-blind clinical trials have found that A. paniculata reduces the severity of common cold symptoms, such as sore throat, upper respiratory catarrh, bronchial cough and fever.[4-7] Andrographolides amounting to 60mg per day have been shown to improve symptoms of the common cold and reduce recovery time.[Preventing colds may be achieved with 10mg andrographolides, which may increase resistance to colds.
Echinacea purpurea E. purpurea has been traditionally used to support immune function and provide relief of upper respiratory catarrh, sore throat and feverish conditions.
Chicoric acid, found in E. purpurea, increases phagocytic activity in vivo after oral administration.
Olea europaea (olive leaf) O. europaea is used in traditional western herbal medicine for respiratory ailments such as cough and sore throat.[2,11,12] The primary active constituent of O. europaea is oleuropein. When hydrolysed by plasma enzymes, oleuropein is broken down to D-elenolic acid (calcium elenolate) which enters infected cells to strengthen immune defence.[11]
Vitamin C
Numerous clinical studies support the use of vitamin C in reducing the severity and duration of colds. Ascorbic acid enhances neutrophil activity and, by reducing plasma histamine levels, dampens the histamine response, which includes symptoms of runny nose and watery eyes.
Zinc
Zinc is the structural component of a wide variety of proteins, neuropeptides, hormone receptors and cell membranes. It inhibits the release of histamine from basophils, and is necessary for the healthy production of lymphocytes.

RestoraCalm is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation due to the berberine content ofPhellodendron amurense, and lack of relevant evidence available for Magnolia officinalis.
There is insufficient research to recommend the use of RestoraCalm in children.
There are no known drug interactions with RestoraCalm; however, Magnolia officinalis bark extract may theoretically potentiate the central depressant effects of other agents that have sedative properties such as alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants.
There is preliminary evidence that berberine, a constituent of Phellodendron amurense, may inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes; however, this interaction is yet to be reported in humans.

Saccharomyces boulardii (SB), a subspecies of S. cerevisiae, is a non-pathogenic biotherapeutic probiotic agent that supports the establishment of friendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In the GIT, SB increases the production of secretory IgA (slgA), short-chain fatty acids and the activity of the brush border disaccharide digestive enzymes. It also discourages the growth of unfriendly micro-organisms and reduces digestive inflammatory mediators.
